How Do You Get A Job As An SEO? What Sort of Qualifications or Prior Experience Do You Need?
By admin | January 27, 2012
The world does, in essence, revolve around the internet, and with this comes a whole new economy, the internet economy. With the number of new fledgling internet-based start-ups cropping up every year, there has never been a better time to get involved in the world of internet marketing, be it as an SEO professional , E-Mail marketing expert, affiliate marketer or whatever your chosen channel might be.
However, getting a job in SEO isn’t always as simple or as easy as it’s made out to be – here as some key tips for what you need to do.
Get Some Experience, Preferably As An Intern:
SEO Companies are very big on their internships – when I was working as an SEO Account Manager we had new interns entering into the field all the time and they were all given valuable experience which would stand them in good stead for their future career, be it in SEO or not.
The main issue with SEO is that there isn’t really a recognised qualification – anyone who has “learned” SEO has typically done so in-house at an SEO Agency, or they have focussed on it on their own. Getting an internship with an Agency is the perfect way to set yourself ahead of the crowd.
Get Some Client Facing Experience:
Some people who want to work in SEO do so as link builders, content marketers and so on – however, the vast majority of people aim to be Account Managers, and work their way up.
Surprisingly, Account Managers aren’t really that hands on when it comes to doing actual SEO work, the main job requirement is typically managing client communications and, more importantly, expectations.
Delivering presentations, dealing with phone calls, e-mail communications, compiling reports, overseeing team activity – you could easily spend you entire day doing the aforementioned if you have a moderately sized client base on your hands, so as such client-facing experience is a bit of a pre-requisite, or at the very least it will help you stand out.
